Speculation of elections in Maharashtra intensifies
The Election Commission may announce the schedule of assembly elections for the 288-member Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. At present, the ruling Mahayuti has 218 seats in Maharashtra and the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi has 78 seats.
Possibility of election announcement in only two states
However, the Election Commission visits the states before announcing the dates of the states. Recently, the Election Commission visited Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana. Therefore, there is also a possibility that the announcement can be made in these two states and the schedule of assembly elections for Maharashtra Assembly can be announced later.
Elections are going to be held in Jammu and Kashmir after a gap of ten years, as the last assembly elections were held in 2014. The PDP-BJP coalition government fell in June 2018, when the PDP withdrew support to then Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.
Announcement may also be made in Haryana
The term of the current government in Haryana will end on November 3, 2024 and elections are to be held in 90 assembly constituencies in the state. After the 2019 elections, the BJP, which has 40 seats in the 90-member assembly, formed a coalition government with the JJP. The JJP had won 10 seats, while the Congress had won 31 seats. The BJP-JJP alliance broke earlier this year. In 2024, Haryana is likely to witness a four-way contest between the BJP, Congress, JJP and AAP.
