Kolkata : Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was attacked by an angry mob while leaving the Alipore court on Tuesday. Despite being surrounded by CRPF and Kolkata Police personnel, Ghosh was slapped and verbally abused by the crowd.
The incident occurred when the CBI team brought Ghosh to the court, where a large crowd had already gathered. As Ghosh arrived, the mob began shouting slogans like "Chor Chor" (thief-thief), with lawyers and common people participating in the protest. When the CBI team attempted to escort Ghosh out of the court premises, a man pushed through the security cordon as he slapped Ghosh.
The CBI officials managed to extricate Ghosh from the scene, but not before the crowd had expressed their outrage. Ghosh was arrested by the CBI two days ago on charges of corruption, including allegations of illegally selling biomedical waste, accepting commissions from suppliers, and demanding money from students to pass exams.
The attack on Ghosh highlights the strong public sentiment against corruption in the medical education sector. The CBI is investigating the allegations against Ghosh, and further action is expected in the coming days.
