Government collapses in Portugal, Prime Minister Luis Montenegro resigns

Luis Montenegro: Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro's government has collapsed after losing a confidence vote in parliament. Out of the 224 MPs present in parliament, only the Social Democratic Party of Montenegro (PSD), the People's Party (CDS-PP) and the Liberal Initiative Party supported him, while the Socialist Party (PS), the far-right Chega, the Left Bloc (BE), the Communist Party (PCP), the Livre and the sole PAN MP voted against him, causing him to lose the confidence vote in parliament. Due to which he had to resign.

Government lasted less than a year

The Luis Montenegro government did not get a majority. The two-party coalition government led by the Social Democratic Party lasted less than a year. It has only 80 seats in the current 230-seat parliament. Under Portugal's constitution, the government must resign if a confidence vote fails. Montenegro's administration will now act as a caretaker government, handling only essential and urgent matters. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is expected to dissolve parliament and call snap elections, which he had previously suggested could be held on May 11 or 18.

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro's leadership has been called into question by a conflict of interest scandal involving a family-owned business. He became prime minister in April 2024 after Montenegro won a general election. His coalition won 80 seats in the 230-seat parliament, compared with 78 for the PS and 50 for the Chega party.
