BJP MLA Rahul Narvekar was on Monday elected unopposed Speaker of the 15th Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. Earlier, Rahul Narvekar had filed his nomination papers on Sunday. After this, the opposition alliance Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) decided not to field anyone from its side. In such a situation, Rahul Narvekar was elected unopposed.

Was re-elected from Colaba assembly seat

The BJP leader, who was the Speaker for two and a half years in the 14th Assembly, was re-elected from the Colaba assembly seat in Mumbai in the assembly elections held on November 20. After the election of the Speaker, there will be a floor test to test the strength of the new government. After this, Governor CP Radhakrishnan will address the joint session of both the houses of the state legislature.

During his tenure as the Speaker of Maharashtra Assembly, Narvekar had ruled that the party led by Eknath Shinde is the legitimate and real Shiv Sena after the split in Bal Thackeray's party. He had also said that the faction led by Ajit Pawar is the real Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), which was formed by Sharad Pawar.

In the recently concluded Maharashtra Assembly elections, the Mahayuti alliance performed brilliantly and won 230 out of 288 seats, while the MVA could win only 46 seats.

Opposition (Shiv Sena-UBT 20 MLAs, Congress 16, NCP-SP 10, CPM 1, PWP 1, AIMIM 1, Samajwadi Party 2)
