Congress's Defeat in Maharashtra and Haryana: How Far Has the Party Fallen in Delhi?
The Congress party's crushing defeat in Maharashtra and Haryana has raised questions about its chances in the upcoming Delhi assembly elections. After a dismal performance in the two states, the party's support base in Delhi appears to be dwindling.
The main fight in Delhi is between Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). AAP is preparing to make the continuous defeat of Congress an issue. AAP is trying to tell the people of Delhi that only Arvind Kejriwal can defeat BJP in Delhi. If this bet of AAP hits, then the Delhi election will not be able to turn into a triangular contest. Congress will be the direct loser of this.
Congress party had contested the elections in Haryana and Maharashtra without declaring a face. Congress suffered losses in both the places. In Delhi also, Congress is preparing to contest without a face. On the other hand, Arvind Kejriwal is the CM face, while BJP is preparing to contest on the face of Modi. BJP will field strong leaders at the local level.
According to the scenario seen so far, the party that defeats BJP has been getting one-sided votes from Muslims. RJD in Bihar, SP in UP and Trinamool in Bengal are examples of this. If such an atmosphere is created in Delhi that only AAP can defeat BJP, then Muslim voters can shift towards Arvind Kejriwal. The population of Muslims in Delhi is around 12 percent.
There is turmoil within the Congress in Delhi. In the last one month, many big leaders like Veer Singh Dhinghan, Sumesh Shaukeen and Chaudhary Mateen Ahmed have left the party. It is being said that in the coming time, many more leaders of Congress can leave the party.
The Congress party was once invincible in Delhi politics, but after 2013, its support base kept decreasing. In the 2020 elections, AAP did not win a single seat. Its vote percentage also decreased. In 2015, AAP got about 9.70 percent votes, which decreased to 4.26 in 2020.
Congress does not have any face in Delhi since 2013. Earlier Sheila Dikshit was the face within Delhi Congress, but she has passed away. Jai Prakash Agarwal and Subhash Chopra used to be strong leaders of the party, but both have now become old. The command of the party is currently with Devendra Yadav, but he also does not have a strong appeal in the whole of Delhi.
AAP announced candidates, BJP formed team
Aam Aadmi Party has released the first list of candidates for the assembly elections in Delhi. Out of the 11 candidates declared by AAP, 6 are leaders from other parties. AAP has declared candidates on those seats where the party's position is weak.
On the other hand, BJP has formed a big team to set the narrative and campaign in the Delhi elections. This team will manage the entire election.
36 MLAs are needed to form a government in the 70-member Delhi Assembly. The election is expected to be a tough contest between AAP, BJP, and Congress. However, Congress's chances appear to be bleak given its current situation.
The Congress party's defeat in Maharashtra and Haryana has raised concerns about its chances in the upcoming Delhi assembly elections. The party's decreasing support base, lack of strong leadership, and slow preparation may hinder its chances of winning the election.
