Former CJI DY Chandrachud Rejects Claims of Being Considered for NHRC Chief Post
In a surprising turn of events, former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has rubbished reports claiming that he is being considered for the post of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) chairman. Chandrachud categorically denied the rumors, stating, "This is a lie. I am now enjoying my retired life".
Chandrachud, who retired as the 50th CJI of the Supreme Court on November 10, clarified that he has no intention of taking up the NHRC chief post. This development comes after a high-level committee chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi met on December 18 to select the new chairman of NHRC.
The NHRC chairperson post has been vacant since June 1, after former Supreme Court judge Arun Kumar Mishra's tenure ended. Vijaya Bharti, an NHRC member, has been serving as the acting chairman since then.
The selection committee for the NHRC chairman includes prominent political figures, such as the Prime Minister, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, the Home Minister, and the Leader of the Opposition in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.
